Protecting the Marine Environment Protects local livelihoods

The ability for ships to comply with the IMO MARPOL regulations, is in the most part, dependent upon the availability of adequate port reception facilities for such waste, in each Member State.

Clean Marine Group Supports Mangrove Mania: A Greener Future for The Bahamas

At Clean Marine Group, our commitment to environmental stewardship is built into everything we do. As a company leading the decarbonisation of the maritime industry by converting waste collected from ships (MARPOL waste) into renewable fuels, we’re driven by a clear mission: to create a scalable, commercially viable, and sustainable waste-to-fuel ecosystem, providing alternative fuels and energy solutions for the shipping industry.

But our vision for a cleaner planet doesn’t stop at our own operations. We believe in supporting projects that align with our environmental goals and deliver meaningful, long-term impact. That’s why we’re proud to announce our donation to Mangrove Mania, a community-powered restoration initiative led by Waterkeepers Bahamas, focused on protecting and replanting the country’s vital mangrove ecosystems.

Mangroves are among the most essential and undervalued ecosystems on Earth. They act as natural coastal defences, sheltering communities from storms and sea-level rise. They’re biodiversity hotspots, providing breeding grounds and shelter for countless species. Perhaps most critically in today’s climate-conscious world, mangroves are powerful carbon sinks—absorbing and storing carbon dioxide at a rate far greater than many terrestrial forests.

Yet these natural wonders are increasingly under threat. In 2019, Hurricane Dorian devastated large areas of mangroves in The Bahamas, particularly in Abaco and Grand Bahama. The loss of these ecosystems was not just environmental, but cultural and economic. Recovery has proven to be slow and complex—precisely the kind of challenge Mangrove Mania seeks to address.

More than a replanting project, Mangrove Mania is a dynamic programme that blends ecological science with community engagement. It restores lost habitats while educating and empowering local people—especially young Bahamians—to take ownership of their environmental future. School outreach, volunteer training, and public awareness campaigns form a key part of the initiative, creating a shared sense of purpose across generations.

Our donation to Mangrove Mania is an extension of our mission and a reflection of our values. As we strive to transform waste into renewable energy and reduce the carbon footprint of the shipping industry, we also see great value in supporting natural climate solutions. Healthy mangrove ecosystems go hand in hand with climate resilience and coastal protection—objectives that are essential for sustainable marine industries and the communities that depend on them.

At Clean Marine Group, we are proud to stand with Waterkeepers Bahamas in restoring The Bahamas’ mangrove forests and championing environmental restoration through collective action. We urge others—whether in the maritime sector, local communities, or the broader business world—to support this cause and help re-green the archipelago.

Together, we can protect what protects us, and build a cleaner, greener future from ship to shore.
